What happens when a Kinect and a Wii controller join forces.

Something for the tech side this week, I recently found out about a excellent mix of technology. Here is the video which better explains it.

I have in the past thought that the Kinect might well be a dead duck, but possibly I have been harsh, its technology has many possibilities just maybe it might be better suited to the PC. If you take a look at its possibilities in 3d modelling, in its mixing with other technology and its future possible games. This could make for a excellent addition along with the Wii controller.

Hello all,

Well its the new year and to get myself in the swing here are 2 videos I uploaded to Vimeo and Youtube that I built in 2010 and 2011. Descriptions are below the videos but these are mainly basic making of videos, no explanations to how I do them but if you use Zbrush you should be able to follow along.

Giraffe Head 2010

Created in 2010 using just one zsphere and working with zsketch for the rest of it, used references to Giraffe skeletons and used that as the beginnings of the build. Funnily enough I didn’t remember I had built this till I finished my early stages of my new giraffe model I’m working on. It popped up when I was doing a search in my work folder and decided to upload it for view pleasure.

GIRAFFEWIP stage1 2011

Created in early January after a short hiatus for the Christmas holidays I started work on a idea I had pop in my head for something that would give me a good warm up to getting back into modelling. This was built in a couple of hours spread over the day and ended up saved till I could start on the next stage. As in the Giraffe Head video I made this only to find out I had built a different version about 3-4 months earlier only for it to get swamped in other work. I suppose it might have been something in the air as it helped me find that lost piece of work along with 3 other models I can finally work on and finish. Animal wise it was funny to see it become something of a flavour of the month, with several artists I know doing Giraffe images also without knowing about the others working on their own. Maybe this is in fact the year of the Giraffe?

Well its been a nice relaxing time for me visiting the folks back down south. Filled my belly and have started to get myself ready to get back on the modelling bandwagon. But what might you ask should I do next? Well it so happens that was answered for me yesterday when one of my do to models was being done by another modeller on one of my regular forums. So I figured Id follow the trend and put my piece in to show people too.

So here’s the extract I posted on my DA account explaining the piece:

Pinkie Pie My Little Pony Quick 3D model

Yes yes it might be aimed at children and girls but the shows just so damn good I couldnt help but try my hand at modelling one of the main cast. I have a love for good well told stories in cartoons, with some of my favourites being Avatar, Wakfu, Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, Batman, Oban Star Racer and to add to the list the new series “My Little Pony Friendship is Magic”.

So why is it good?

Well its been designed to appeal to girls without actually paying the sickening sweet card every minute, the design styles of all the characters work well together and the comical moments between the cast (especially Pinkie Pie and her breaking the 4th wall antics) allow you to get sucked into the story.

Plus its ability to make male grown men squee with delight on forum boards shows that its got something going for it.

The model took about 8hrs ish to make, and was done entirely in Zbrush.

I have a video of the making of the model which I’ll work on uploading to vimeo soonish, however I forgot to add the last section to the video so the final bits are missing ( but they were mostly just tweaks and colouring).

Anyway comments are welcome.

(quick addition : I havent got access to my usual equipment I use (high end pc) so having to resort to just giving a reasonable paint job for the balloons for the moment. My poor laptop couldnt hack it above 2 million so going higher will have to wait till I can either uv map it in blender or get it onto the pc and up the subdivisions more :P .)

Also here for those interested in view the making of the models are 3 videos, first two start a little after I had used zspheres to model the basic shape I needed and then worked on it from there, the final section was lost unfortunately so I added a final result spin vid to show how it came out.
